Background & Experience

Evan co-founded Shames Makovsky Realty Company in 1971 with his partner, and uncle, Motty Shames. Initially, the company specialized in the commercial brokerage of industrial and investment properties. However, in response to financial conditions in the mid 1980’s, Evan formed Shames Makovsky Mortgage Company which specializes in “non-conventional” financing. The mortgage company led the company into the equity markets and consequently into development. Working with Motty, Evan took Shames Makovsky Realty Company from a small industrial brokerage firm to a full-service commercial real estate company offering brokerage, investments, development, property management, and lending.

Evan is the managing partner/member and part owner of numerous ownership groups which own various commercial real estate investments. He has sold, leased, developed, and funded many notable projects, some of which include the Sage Building, Marriott Residence Inn at 18th and Champa, the historic Colorado Business Bank building at 17th and Stout, Mapleton Distribution Center and the Hilton Garden Inn and Embassy Suites hotels in Boulder.

In January 2019, Evan was inducted into the Colorado Business Hall of Fame, making him part of a league of outstanding individuals who have made legendary contributions to the free enterprise system. The Colorado Business Hall of Fame celebrates the legacies of individuals who have ensured that Colorado’s future is rooted in the values of personal integrity and community leadership. Those honored lead by example and provide inspiration for all generations of Coloradans.

In November 2015, The Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative at the University of Colorado Denver Business School honored Evan with the inaugural Bill Daniels Ethical Leader of the Year Award. This award is grounded on the eight principles that Bill Daniels espoused during his long and successful business career: Integrity, Trust, Accountability, Transparency, Fairness, Respect, Rule of Law and Viability.

Evan obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a Masters of Science in Business Administration and Finance from the University of Denver. In 2007, he was named Honorary Dean of Real Estate and Construction Management of the Franklin G. Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management at the University of Denver. Evan was also given an honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from Johnson and Wales University in 2008.

Evan and his wife Evelyn (Evi) have three grown children and nine grandchildren. They enjoy traveling the world to immerse themselves in other cultures and learn how others live. They believe in strongly supporting the community by assisting with its growth and development and therefore are involved in many community organizations.
